Garmin inReach Explorer+
I’ll be using at least one GPS system on board actively with at least one system in reserve as back up. The Garmin InReach is a super awesome handheld unit.. low power demand so my Pedal Powered Generating System wont be heavily taxed on a day to day basis.
“Iridium is used for two functions, messaging and track updates to your MapShare page. The GPS features are self contained, like other Garmin units. So without the satellites you still have your exact location on a 24k scale map, digital compass, track log on the InReach.”

Dual Double Disc
I’ve always thought that a double disc front wheel was a better idea than the one- sided versions. Now that it’s available.. I have a SUPER COOL option for Direct Drive Propulsion.. meaning- I can REVERSE! I’ll be adding in two (2) chainrings.. one on each side.. such that pedal- to- hub will be “direct” and then hub- to- driveleg will be, likewise “direct” and it’ll be like having a Fixie driving the boat. It’ll be slower going so not ideal for open ocean propulsion but when I hit harbours and rivers and suchlike I will be able to navigate easier.. dock simpler.. as I’ll have a REVERSE option.. no freewheeling just direct Fixie Driving.. in either direction.
I’m hoping to have at least two units so that I can have a unit in- use and a backup incase of breakdown. I don’t hope for breakdown but I always say- hope for the best, plan for the worst!

Sram10spd 6- bolt Rear Hub
I’ve always felt that pedalling on the ocean needed gears.. most, if not all, Pedal Powered boats use a Direct Drive system (and many use a flexible chaft to marry the pedal drive to the prop) with the crank arms mounted directly to the Gear Reducer (right angle gear reducer) but.. In My Humble Opinion.. your body goes through energy variations throughout the day.. so, if you are hoping to Pedal for 10 to 16 hours a day.. each day.. it helps overall progress to maximize all energy ranges. I mean.. if I’m feeling ‘too tired’ and I have one gear to choose from.. I might be inclined to Not Pedal at all.. but with gear options- I can choose a lighter gear and Keep Moving! This theory has been resounded by several physicians.
This unit will have a fixed chainring on the non- drive side that will connect directly to the Pedal Drive Leg. It is my hope to have no less than two of these units.. one In Use and one as standby.

The Build Requirements: |
Fiberglass Cloth
Excellent Features: The 9.5oz fiberglass cloth is popular for a wide range of lightweight applications like laminating, reinforcing, sheathing and waterproofing. It is a flexible fabric and it wets out transparently. Fiberglass mat is the most commonly used reinforcement in composites.
One “unit” covers the boat tip to toe once for either the hull or the cabin (bottom half or top half) thus, for one complete layer I will need two units and I am hoping to lay up multiple layers (3 or 4 layers) sandwiching foam board insulation in between a couple of the layers.
|
Expanding Foam Kit
“TWO-PART, MARINE GRADE EXPANDING FOAM cures very hard and rigid, with high compressive strength ideal for a number of marine and residential applications, including structural reinforcement, architectural castings, art projects and flotation
6 POUNDS PER CUBIC FOOT HIGH-DENSITY FORMULA is perfect for casting, carving, sculpture, plug making, sign making, flotation for boats and buoys, floating decoys, part fabrication, replicating wooden parts, rigidifying, structural support and more.”
Both the Main Boat~ the one I am currently building in to the OCean Going Pedal Powered (and as yet unnamed) vessel~ as well as my “trailer” boat will need additional Floatational Foam. In order to be safe, I am budgeting for four (4) kits of this product.. more may be needed but we’ll see.
|
System Three T-88 Kit
Exhibits outstanding adhesion on a wide variety of materials.. I’ve already used through several “tubes” of the product and it holds with incredible strength. The initial layer of the cockpit flooring that is also lengthening the boat is SOLID as are the sides and added enhancements. I’ll be going through a TON of this product as the weather warms up (or the Boatshed warms up.. either or…).
This is a core component of the build as it is added to one surface when I am attaching new pieces.. so I see a need for about 10 units.. possibly more through the build of the Main Boat and the customization of the Trailer Boat.

Epoxy Resin 2 Gallon Kit
“HEAVY DUTY CLEAR COATING/ADHESIVE – Achieve clear, flawlessly transparent epoxy coatings with our ultra-high performance resin and hardener kit! This premium professional grade epoxy goes on smooth and dries evenly to eliminate crawling, trickling, craters and “fish eyes”
This is a core component of the build as it is needed to afix the fibreglass and/ or carbon fibre fabric to the boat. Initial estimates are for four (4) units.

2 Gal Pro Art Resin Kit
“EASY TO USE: This resin has a convenient 1:1 ratio and a perfect texture, being easy to use by beginners and pros. The convenient kit includes 1 gallon resin and 1 gallon hardener, covering all your needs.”
I’ll be making moulds for my “counterweight” that will be under my boat. The Counterweight is used much like a sailboat Keel.. it’ll help keep me upright and, in the event of a capsize, it will help right my boat back to normie status. The counterweight will be sitting at just under 1meter under the boat and it is, proposed, to weigh somewhere in the neighbourhood of 40Lbs. By my initial estimates, in order to “pour” two counterweights I will need three to four kits.

Kerosene Heater
I’ve already purchased and am using one cool vintage kerosene heater.. figured just adding in a couple of these would boost the temperature inside the Boatshed nicely. Runs clean and easy.. all I need to do is add in a simple fan system for nominal ducats and The Shed will be nice and toasty warm.. and running them sporadically~ when needed~ won’t produce too much moisture build up.
|
Kerosene
Pretty simple.. fuel to run the heaters. My guess, based on winter darkroom heat considerations, is that I’ll need about 30gal. of this to finish the boat.

Nikon D6
What to say.. I’ve been shooting with Nikon for almost 30 years.. and when I had the opportunity to purchase an F5 kit.. I jumped at it.. I was, afterall, on deck to work for Petersen’s Publishing.. I just had to have the gear.. and the nknow- how to use the gear.. then I met my wife and plans changed 😉
At any rate, all of my gear thus far is Nikon.. and while I still prefer to shoot with the F5 (and I’ll be getting a second body shortly).. shooting high quality stills is needed for this project. So, this body is needed to be added to “the quivver.”

Nikon PC-E FX Micro NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D
Wow.. Perspective Control for 35mm (or dSLR). I’ve needed this sort of lens for about 20 years.. it’s a must- have for architectural or structurally oriented photography. So, from a more standard point of view- shooting a wedding party in front of a big building will produce perspective shift needs in order to get the straight lines.. a subtle difference but one I’ve talked about frequently and, in deed, sold a few of these (canon varieties) to wedding shooters in Banff during my time as a fim shop employee.

Nikon AF-S FX 200-400mm f/4G ED
Variable.. a good range to work with when shooting in situations where you don’t want to be seen.. shooting. I’ve long had a dream to go Urban Shooting and capture~ specifically~ Bike Couriers. My rules: No Recognition of the subject.. but I want to shoot The Action of couriering. I’ve shot some.. definitely want to shoot more. And in different locations .. perfect for my journey.

Canon VIXIA HF G20 Camcorder
Not only do I want to document the whole process of The Build but I want to document and share the open water trials and the entire journey.. AND there is a need to shoot some creative serial- based material for audience entertainment and enhancement. This tool isn’t “broadcast quality” but it is good enough for webcasting.. perfect, even, for that sort of use. I’ll be wanting as many of these as I can collect.. ideally, all of them being the same brand, model, and version for simplified video editing.
