The Suburinator

Was born as a rigid singletrack deamon.. the Stumpjumper by Specialized. It lived as a mountain bike.. was reborn as a courier rig.. and now lives ON as.. a 54 speed high speed attempt rig!

54 speeds on a 16″ steel singeltrack Specialized Stumpjumper equipped with a non- stictioning AMP F3 fork (rigid fork, suspended).. lovely ride in the urban environment.. with a few tweaks she’ll be DIALLED for downhill speed tests.. wihtout powermeters, presently.

She has a 3spd Sturmey Archer rear hub (gearing chart) with a 9spd casette on it.. right there, we have 27 gears.. but up front we have a 52/42 chainring.. meaning the total gear number is… 54 freakin gears!

54 freakin gears!!

Various views of The Suburbinator.. along with several models/ sessions with models through the past few years… with more to come as her mechanical prowess becomes perfected.

But.. as you can imagine- there’s a TON of overlap. I mean, gear ONE of the Sturmey hub is NEGATIVE so… it means nothing. Gear two is 1:1 so it, also, means really nothing… but Gear Three is a POSITIVE so it means GROWTH in gear inches. I did the math awhile ago and while it made NO SENSE to me what so ever.. the gear inches were HUGE.

So… using the Sturmey Archer hub I can achieve massive Gear Inches without adding in a Jack Shaft.. which is what Rick and I, from Bloomfield Bike Co., were talking about in 1992! Bottom Bracket to Bottom Bracket to Rear Wheel (3x 3x 8spd or so.. back then). 1992… so long ago. I was cycling from Ottawa to… Kelowna. Got “sidelined” so to speak by Rick and Katy @ the Bloomfield Bike Shop and taken to the Toronto Bike Show.. so many memories.

SUBURBINATOR LIVES!!!
So, let’s test this sucker out!!! I am now located, geographically speaking, near the North Coast of BC… so I have to set up my (mobile) bike shop and finish TUNING the suburbinator but…without fairings.. without excessive use of gravity.. I hope to push The Suburbinator to MASSIVE speeds (PLEDGE BASED!!!)
