One Million Parked Cars
So, what.. big deal.. Why park the car?
I’ll admit that when I launched in to a life built around the bicycle, part of the motivation was~ I didn’t want to spend bus fare. and I didn’t have the cash to buy a car. Then, I had issues with the schedules- not just READING them (and understanding is a seperate issue) but paying heed to the times I had to be at specific places was.. difficult.
Even when I went to buy Van #2.. instead of taking Public Transit, I headed out on my Felt S22 (or is it my wifes? Not sure…) and rode South in the city till I got to the dealership. Ended up driving it home.
But, somewhere in the mix, during the 20 or 30 years of living as a cyclist.. I learned a thing or two..
Some Deets:
When i was working at Wood ‘N’ Energy, at the base of Carlington Ski Hill, Ottawa.. some of our customers were working in energy (governmental agencies) and pushing for a shift away from oil (already, that was back in 1989, TBH!). One of them shared some scary bits of info
- An automobile won’t reach it’s *efficiency rating* until it is fully warmed up which is at about 12Km of use.. so, if your drive is less than 12Km, your car NEVER hits optimum efficiency!
- Internal Combustion engines release over 900 (yes, that’s NINE HUNDRED) toxic effluents in use.. some are miniscule in volume but when you consider a city population with over 500,000 autos in use.. they add up QUICK and you’ve got heavy metal build up! NOT GOOD
But here are some specific stats:
Commuting to work, 20 km per day 5 days per week for 47 weeks per year would.. result in:
